Today, ‘Pac-Man’ is the first and the only boxer to ever become the world champion in eight different boxing categories. Manny also made another milestone in his boxing career in 2019 after defeating Keith Thurman to become the oldest welterweight world champion in boxing history. ‘Pac-Man’ has made a name for himself, and most people often refer to him as the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world.
“I never thought he would get anywhere as a fighter. He was wild. He threw punches from all directions, no signs whatsoever. But he had power, and he had guts and courage… But I’d never in my wildest dreams thought he would get where he is today.” That is how Ronnie Nathanielsz described Manny Pacquiao a few years ago.
Manny (62-7-2,39KOs), however, shocked the world on Friday afternoon when he took to his Twitter account to announce that his bout versus Errol Spence (27-0, 21KOs) had been set for August 21st in Las Vegas. Source confirmed the announcement with the managers of both boxers, making this one of the best boxing bouts the boxing calendar will ever have. The magnitude of the fight between two of the world’s best fighters crowns everything as elite and must-watch.
That said, Manny has been in inactivity since defeating Keith Thurman in 2019. This saw WBA strip him off his WBA super welterweight title due to inactivity, and to claim that back, he would have to get back into the ring again. Standing on his way will be Errol Spence, ranked 4th by ESPN among the best pound-for-pound boxers.
This fight will be an excellent test for Manny since Spence is the current unified WBC and IBF titleholder who has never lost a bout after ripping Kell Brook’s face to clinch the WBC title.
Pac-Man, 42, is known for never shying away from any opponent since starting his boxing career. He remains the personification of all contradictions in boxing embodied in one person by beating the favorite opponents more than many times in his career.
